Get ready to step back in time with us as we celebrate a century of Gulf County, Florida!
2025 marks our 100th anniversary, and boy, have we seen some incredible moments. From early settlers to the rise of local landmarks, Gulf County has been a playground for history buffs, nature lovers, and beach seekers alike. So, grab your time machine (or just scroll down) and let’s take a trip through some of the most iconic events in Gulf County’s timeline!
Early 1700s: Spanish Invasion (But in a Cool Way!)
Before the sun kissed our sandy beaches, Gulf County was already making waves with some pretty epic history. Coastal American Indians roamed the area, harvesting food and living off the land. Then, in the early 1700s, Spanish explorers dropped anchor at Cape San Blas, making their mark on the region. But it wasn’t just the Spanish who saw the potential here. In 1822, settlers founded Apalachicola, a bustling port town, and St. Joseph’s (later Port St. Joe) was established in 1835, thanks to its deeper harbor at 17 feet. By 1836, the first steam locomotive in Florida ran from Depot Creek to St. Joseph Bay, putting the region on the map as a key transportation hub in the U.S.
1838: A Constitutional Gathering in Gulf County
Did you know Gulf County was home to one of Florida’s most important historic moments? In 1838, 56 delegates gathered in St. Joseph to draft Florida’s first state constitution. This historic event was a pivotal moment in the path to Florida’s statehood. Back then, St. Joseph was the largest city in Territorial Florida, with a booming population near 11,000. The town earned the nickname "Constitution City," and it’s a badge of honor we proudly wear today.
1839: The Lighthouse That Still Shines
No Gulf County timeline would be complete without mentioning the iconic Cape San Blas Lighthouse! After surviving storms, erosion, and a Civil War attack, the lighthouse was rebuilt multiple times (originally built in 1829), including its fourth and final reconstruction as a skeletal structure in 1883. The lighthouse, along with the Keeper's Quarters and oil shed, was then moved to Port St. Joe in 2014 to preserve its legacy, and the doors were opened for visitors to explore. Now standing proudly in George Core Park, it offers stunning views of St. Joseph Bay and remains a cherished symbol of Gulf County’s rich maritime history.
1925: A Big Moment for Gulf County!
In 1925, Gulf County was officially founded, setting the stage for the vibrant community we know and love today. This year marked the beginning of the county's official recognition, and it’s been growing in beauty, history, and community spirit ever since. The area's stunning coastline, rich heritage, and strong sense of community have attracted countless visitors and residents alike.
1936: Paper, Paper, Paper!
In 1936, St. Joe Paper Company was founded, which would go on to play a significant role in the development of Gulf County's economy and industry. The paper mill, opened in 1938, became a powerhouse of the region, employing hundreds of locals and helping shape Port St. Joe into an industrial hub. Though the mill closed in 1999, the legacy of this once-thriving industry remains a key part of Gulf County’s history and transformation into a tourist destination.
1967: Let’s Go Camping!
Want a blast from the past? In 1967, T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park opened its doors. With its beautiful coastline, secluded beaches, and abundant wildlife, the park quickly became a popular spot for families, nature lovers, and outdoor adventurers. Imagine the first visitors setting up their tents and soaking in the fresh air—it’s been a favorite for over 50 years!
