Paradise Starts with Preparation
There's nothing quite like a day at the beach in Gulf County. Whether you're building sandcastles, searching for shells, casting a line, or simply relaxing with your toes in the sand, a little preparation can go a long way toward making sure your beach day is memorable for all the right reasons.
Before you grab your beach chair and sunscreen, here are a few local tips to help you enjoy a fun and safe day along our beautiful shoreline.
Know the Beach Flag System
One of the first things you should do when arriving at the beach is check the warning flags. These flags provide important information about current water conditions and help you make informed decisions before entering the Gulf.
Beach Flag Meanings:
🟢 Green Flag – Low hazard. Calm conditions, but always exercise caution.
🟡 Yellow Flag – Medium hazard. Moderate surf and currents.
🔴 Red Flag – High hazard. Strong surf and currents.
🔴🔴 Double Red Flag – Water closed to the public. Do not enter the Gulf.
🟣 Purple Flag – Dangerous marine life may be present.
Even on beautiful days, water conditions can change quickly, so be sure to check the flags before heading into the water.
Keep an Eye on the Weather
Summer in Florida often includes brief afternoon thunderstorms. While these showers can pass quickly, lightning can travel long distances and should always be taken seriously.
If you hear thunder, it's time to head indoors or seek shelter.
Visitors can stay informed by monitoring local forecasts and signing up for emergency notifications through ALERT Gulf.
Stay Hydrated and Sun Smart
The Florida sun can be stronger than many visitors expect, even on cloudy days.
To stay comfortable throughout the day:
- Drink plenty of water.
- Reapply sunscreen regularly.
- Take breaks in the shade.
- Wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing when possible.
A little extra preparation can help prevent sunburn, dehydration, and heat-related illnesses.
Share the Shore with Wildlife
Our beaches are home to more than just visitors.
Depending on the time of year, you may encounter nesting sea turtles, shorebirds, dolphins, crabs, and other coastal wildlife. Observing these animals from a respectful distance helps protect both the wildlife and their habitats.
Remember:
- Never disturb sea turtle nests.
- Give shorebirds plenty of space.
- Do not feed wildlife.
- Keep beaches clean and free of litter.
These simple actions help preserve Gulf County's natural beauty for future generations.
Leave Only Footprints
One of the easiest ways to help protect our beaches is to leave them exactly as you found them, or even better.
Before leaving:
- Pick up all trash.
- Remove beach gear and personal belongings.
- Fill in large holes dug in the sand.
- Knock down sand structures near the waterline.
These small steps help protect wildlife, prevent hazards for other beachgoers, and keep our beaches beautiful.
Here's to Your Best Beach Day Yet
The best beach days are filled with sunshine, laughter, and memories that last long after the sand is washed away. By staying aware of your surroundings, respecting wildlife, and preparing for changing conditions, you'll be ready to enjoy everything Gulf County's beaches have to offer.
So grab your sunscreen, check the flags, and enjoy your time along the coast. We'll see you on the beach!
