Dive Into Gulf County For Tasty Treasures This Season
Gulf County, FL is home to a lot of unique and breathtaking experiences, but a true “GCFL First” is scalloping. For a few months each year, families travel to the Gulf from around the country to jump in and grab a bucket of these succulent ocean treasures.
It may sound intimidating, but this outdoor activity is actually perfect for beginners and doesn’t require much more than a saltwater fishing license and a mandatory dive flag (both things you can get while you’re in the area). A mask and snorkel are your guides as you glide over grass beds in two-to-three foot deep water, scooping up scallops as you explore. Some visitors choose to wade out from the shore, look for the myriad of glowing blue eyes along the edge of their shells, and scoop them up.
What else do you need to round out your adventure? We suggest a mesh bag for collecting your scallops, an ice chest for storing them, a scallop knife and neoprene water shoes. Fun fact: If you’d rather not scallop alone, the Port St. Joe Marina offers group trips.
