Tupelo is a premier honey crop in this country, and the epicenter of tupelo honey is Gulf County, Florida, says Adventure Guide Brian, owner of Smiley Honey. So, of course it would make sense for locals and local chefs alike to incorporate the delicacy into as many dishes as possible. But, some of the combinations may surprise you!
Have you visited the new Shipwreck Raw Bar yet? We love it there and one of our favorites is the Bee Sting Shrimp. They are sautéed in a spicy Tupelo Honey sauce. Yum! And, they use tupelo in the butter for their sweet potatoes – what a great idea!
Or, Chef Ian Williams over at Sunset Coastal Grill uses it in his honey teriyaki glaze. Right now he’s loving it on freshly caught cobia. In fact, Sunset welcomes guests to bring in their fresh catch on ice. He and his team would like nothing better than to serve it up for you.
Mason Dixon has been using Tupelo Honey in their salad dressings and on their Old Dominion sandwich since Kellee opened her gourmet food truck a few years ago in Port St. Joe. Now, she’s opened Shoobie’s, a gelato and ice cream truck out on the Cape. They’ve created a new signature sundae in honor of Tupelo. The “Wewa” sundae has banana chips, Tupelo Honey and roasted peanuts.
