“He and I dive together. I got him diving at 12 years old and now he loves scuba diving and snorkeling,” explains Adventure Guide and charter captain Bobby Guilford about his son Wade and their family tradition.
People who visit are surprised at how clear our water is even in the Bay. There are some nice in-shore spots created by the Mexico Beach Reef Association. Great family dives at around 30-feet. Or, if you go out a little farther but still around 50-feet down there are big old shrimp boats and barges. Tons of snapper, grouper and big amberjack hide around there. Wade and I like the Shady Lady or the OAR Barge.
Captain Bobby’s Break A Way Charters also offers shallow diving with the Hookah Rig. The hookah rig? Bobby explains you are diving without a tank by being attached to a 60-foot or 100-foot hose. He says it’s the same regulator that you breathe with when you scuba but you are attached to the boat. Experts are watching your oxygen. You can dive down to 20-ft and stay there all day. Perfect for scallop hunting in St. Joseph Bay!
Captain Bobby recommends diving for your next family adventure. Try out his hookah rig or book a trip with Daly’s Watersports. They rent gear and lead guided dives.
