CHECK DIVING OFF YOUR LIST

Ann Marie Daly, Adventure Guide and owner of Daly’s Watersports, is from North Dakota and was a reluctant diver. In fact, she didn’t really enjoy getting wet. Gulf County made her a believer.

Diving changes kids’ lives. It’s a lifetime sport that never needs renewing. You are certified for life even if you started with your junior certification when you were young. It’s like riding a bike - when the training wheels come off, you’re still riding a bike,” says Ann Marie.

“Once a young lady came to us. She was a referral. That means they do the pool work at home for certification and then do the open dive with us to finalize. Once she was under the water in the Gulf of Mexico, she said she wanted to be a Marine Biologist! Diving gave her life direction. It changes your outlook.”

Discover Scuba is a fabulous experience. It’s for ages 10 and up. You don’t need any experience with water at all. We will take you through a basic training and we gear you up and head out to the tip of the Cape. We ease out to deeper water to practice. Then we go over to the Vamar (The Vamar Preserve is listed on the National Register of Historic Places) to do an actual scuba dive with our dive master. We take four people at a time. The program has been around for 10 years. You get to experience diving without spending your whole vacation time learning. Not everyone in your family may want to try it and it’s only a half-day commitment. But, I promise you’ll remember it all of your life. Almost all of our good diving is within the depth limit of Discover Scuba (approximately 40 feet). It’s an accessible adventure for so many more people.

Diving changes your life – It changed mine! – because there is so much to see down there. It’s one time when you’re disconnected – truly immersed – especially for teens. Parents drop them off for Discover Scuba and they are bored, distracted teens. They come back and they are so excited, sunburned, happy. They can’t wait to show me or their parents on their phones what they saw. Often the next year, they get certified and then come back again as a certified diver to go deeper.
