Cape St. George Light:

History: The St. George lighthouse was first built in 1833 at West Pass, and rebuilt on Cape St. George in 1848. The second lighthouse fell during a hurricane in 1851 and the third lighthouse was completed in 1852. The Light was automated in 1949 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The Coast Guard deactivated the light in 1994. Beach erosion at the site of the lighthouse continually threatened the structure until it collapsed on October 21, 2005. Remnants of the historic structure were salvaged and the St. George Lighthouse Association led the effort to reconstruct the lighthouse. Volunteers cleaned old mortar off more than 22,000 original bricks and assisted with reconstruction of the lantern room. With extensive community support and public and private funding, the Cape St. George Light was successfully rebuilt in 2008 at the center of St. George Island.

Directions: The Cape St. George Light is located at the center of St. George Island, off the coast of Florida’s Panhandle between Tallahassee and Panama City. From U.S. 98 in Eastpoint, turn onto State Road 300 (Island Drive) and cross the 4.2 mile bridge to St. George Island.

The park includes picnic pavilions, showers, restrooms, and a boardwalk to the beach. The Visitor Center offers area information and a small exhibit of lighthouse artifacts.
