The narrowest section of St. Joseph Peninsula is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Known locally as "The Stump Hole", this half-mile stretch of land divides the Gulf of Mexico from St. Joe Bay by only a few hundred yards. Years of tropical storms have eroded the gulf-side beach, leaving only the stumps of what was at one time a long-leaf pine forest. The stumps have become a natural attraction for fish and crabs, making this section of The Cape a popular spot for surf fishermen, cast-netters and crabbers.
